January's Food Dude and Food Dudette

Food Dude and Food Dudette is back from the holiday break and ready to highlight a couple of DC noshers who only made one New Year's Resolution, and it was to be featured on WWEIL. Today we help them achieve their goal of the year; in return they teach us why a super dry, medium-dirty jalapeno martini should be your drink of 2010, and how to slap a pickle with your tongue (watch your party invites double!). Eating their way through our nation's capitol and straight into your hearts, here's Vaugh and Adam:

 January's Food Dudette:
Vaughn, Washington DC, Pickle Tongue Slap

What is going on in this picture and are you a pickle fanatic?
YES. I am a pickle fanatic. I want to marry the pickle man at Eastern Market, but he's taken. I was doing a little pickle tongue slap:

Last thing you ate?
Chocolate truffle

Best thing you’ve eaten recently?
Dinner this week:  Beef short rib stew cooked by Amelia, my friend/coworker/awesome amateur chef. Yum.

All time favorite food?
Chicken Pad Thai from Siam Bayshore in Miami.

Favorite dessert?
Indian mango sorbet and/or Baci ice cream (dark chocolate espresso hazelnut) from Frieze Ice Cream Factory in Miami (noticing a theme here...)

Favorite local restaurant?
Tie: Mandu and Cork

Favorite chain restaurant?
Wendy's

Favorite non-alcoholic drink?
Water

Favorite alcoholic beverage?
Whiskey

Ultimate food day? (Best breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, snack combo)
If I had unlimited room in my belly: Sunrise pizza from Red Rocks + bottomless mimosas for breakfast; lunch would be a Tropicale combo (hot dog with pineapple, mozzarella, and special sauce + fries) from Dogma, a Miami hot dog place; I guess I'll go with that Pad Thai for dinner...or a big juicy steak, medium. With something chocolaty for dessert.

Favorite food to make yourself?
Recently, scrambled eggs with pepper and onion and a baby bell cheese; I'm not much of a chef.

What do you bring to a pot luck?
Roasted red pepper dip and bread. And wine.

What's your least favorite food?
Shrimp.

Favorite and/or least favorite food celeb?
Fave: Bobby Flay, also the Ace of Cakes people.

What do you do when you're not eating or drinking?
Body Attack.

Anything else we should know about your hilarity or food consumption?
I keep a food journal with the theory that writing down everything I eat will make me eat less. It doesn't work. I just end up writing "too much beer...", etc.

January's Food Dude:
Adam, Washington DC, Sushi Standoff

What is going on in this picture and did you almost unhinge your jaw to gulp down all this sushi at once?
This is the sushi 3 friends and I made to accompany our treehouse screening of the Mighty Ducks trilogy. We managed, in fact, to share it equitably and not eat too fast. I did eat about 1/3 of the ingredients while we were rolling, though.

Last thing you ate?
Currently eating, uncharacteristically, some kind of Asian salad wrap from a trendy place in Dupont Circle + lemongrass tea.

Best thing you’ve eaten recently?
Over the holidays, my mom and I had a great idea: We took a whole beef tenderloin, seared it on the stove, then finished it in the oven, pretty much creating a giant filet mignon. It was medium-rare the whole way through, and unfathomably tender and melty. I meant to put butter on it, but I forgot.

All time favorite food?
Toro sushi was my initial response, but I've only managed to try chu-toro, and only once. It was fantastic. "Cook it on your tongue," says Chairman Kaga of Culinary Academy.

Nothing for me can compare to a truly exceptional batch of fried rice. It has some element I cannot name... Thai-style is the closest archetype I can give. Wait--there's one thing that can compare: Inspired, well-crafted sandwiches. If I ever degenerate to the point of worshiping physical objects, it will be sandwiches/a sandwich.

Favorite dessert?
Baskin Robbins' ice cream cake, the kind that's log shaped and looks like a swirly when you cut it! It's been my favorite since my 1st birthday. Here's a picture of one incorporating mint chocolate chip ice cream, the proper flavor to use.

Favorite local restaurant?
Bistrot Du Coin

Favorite chain restaurant?
Steak 'n' Shake, the 24-hr, smoking-allowed, darling of the Midwest.

Favorite non-alcoholic drink?
Ha, I failed the 10-second challenge on this one. Water with ice cubes, green tea, coffee... I need them all. Hot and cold both have their place in the pantheon. Ogod! I forgot about orange juice. Orange juice. Final answer.

Favorite alcoholic beverage?
Super dry, medium-dirty jalapeno martini (using vodka, a rare exception). The capsaicin in peppers is alcohol-soluble so it slowly infuses the vodka, increasing the spiciness over time. Thin jalapeno slices float beautifully on the surface. As seen here!

Ultimate food day? (Best breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, snack combo)
Breakfast:
I'm usually anti-breakfast... Black tea with milk, oj, and a slice of melon will do.

Lunch:
Sandwiches, authentic ramen, or that magical bowl of fried rice.

Dinner:
pre-dinner drink: Single malt Scotch, neat
appetizer: Steamed mussels, shrimp & parsley dumplings, tempura, and a dry, sparkling white wine
main course: Omakase sushi & sashimi, a braised shank over risotto, red wine... merlot?
dessert: A slice of sweet potato pie, white coffee

Snack:

Favorite food to make yourself?
My recent obsession has been learning to sear the perfect crust on a big slab of fish.

What do you bring to a pot luck?
A smile <3

What's your least favorite food?
Food made without love.

Favorite and/or least favorite food celeb?
Best: Giada de Laurentiis. She's my everyday Italian.

Worst: Rachael Ray

What do you do when you're not eating or drinking?
Napping

Anything else we should know about your hilarity or food consumption?
I AM FOOD

October's Food Dude and Food Dudette

So I'm about a week late on showcasing our lovely Food Dude and Food Dudette of October, which is totally surprising because October is my other favorite month of all time (don't get jealous, September, you and I shared something special, but it's over now...). I've been away from writing a bit, y'know working on lots of behind the scenes techno wizardry and such, trying to spread our work around, design a logo, basically making a name for ourselves so I can push Blogger and it's bugs off a cliff. Also, I've been into this new trend that's getting big here with the writers at WWEIL which is getting engaged - Huzzah! So I'm gonna go ahead and blame that on my tardiness also. Ideally I'd be amazing you great readers with my reviews of weird Halloween novelty candy every day, but this guy is already doing that. And, while that is spooktacular and all, I'm realizing that I'm taking you away from the real stars of this post, Brandon and Emily, who remind us that fall is all about shameless gluttoney and family. And about making everything within an arm's reach pumpkin flavored. So turn off the lights, sit in the ghostly glow of your computer, and let October's Food Dude and Food Dudette creep you out with their favorite eerie eats.

October's Food Dude:
Brandon, Alexandria Virginia, Shrimp and Rum Feast

What's happening in this picture?
About 9 other guys and I went out to Dewey Beach for a long Labor Day weekend and we destroyed close to 10 lbs. of 'peel and eat' shrimp at a joint called Northbeach. The frozen drinks scattered around are 'Dewey Devils' and they aren't light on rum at all. Mock me all you want about sipping on frozen pink drinks.

What is the last thing you ate?
Potato, clam, and corn chowder with rock shrimp and lobster risotto. You caught me right after an anniversary dinner at Geriano's in Old Town Alexandria!

Best thing you’ve eaten recently?
Mushroom cheesesteak from The Broiler in Arlington, VA. It's a hole in the wall establishment with the best cheesesteaks in the area. The best part about this place is they serve crinkle cut fries. CRINKLE CUT FRIES!!

All time favorite food?
My dad's Brunswick Stew. I could probably argue something else, but with the fall weather kicking in, I've definitely got a hankerin' for some of it. His is a thick, spicy stew with corn, lima beans, tomatoes, okra, peas, pulled chicken and pork and whatever other vegetables he grew in his backyard garden...that and a side of cornbread makes things perfect.

Favorite dessert?
My mother-in-law's apple dumplings and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It's another fall treat, I'm really lucky it's October.

Favorite local restaurant?
Ray's Hell Burgers and Lost Dog Cafe in Arlington or Honey Pig Gooldagee Korean Grill in Annandale. Ray's has great juicy burgers, though it is a bit crowded now that Obama has chowed down there, and Lost Dog puts money towards a Rescue fun for stray dogs in need of a home. Honey Pig is a great 24 hour grill that is always packed with people devouring good Korean food and chugging some soju.

Favorite chain restaurant?
Cracker Barrel. Maybe because there isn't a Cracker Barrel within like 25 miles and I haven't been to one in ages. Breakfast anytime of the day is always a good start and fried apples, biscuits, sunny side up eggs and all the trimmings is hard to beat on a chain level.

Favorite non-alcoholic drink?
Am I over doing the fall theme when I say I love Pumpkin Spice Lattes from Starbucks? mmm...

Favorite alcoholic beverage?
Bourbon, on the rocks. Nothing extravagant, Maker's Mark, American Eagle, something like that.

Ultimate food day? And/or best breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, snack?
Eggs Benedict for breakfast, maybe some grits too, then a perfect lunch would be a plain tomato sandwich with homegrown tomatoes, not store bought tomatoes. A little mayo, salt, pepper, toasted bread...perfection. An A+ dinner would be a big Thanksgiving spread, stuffing, cranberry sauce, turkey, sweet potatoes, the list goes on. I'm a sucker for desserts but I love chocolate cake, or maybe ice cream of any kind...or both... For snacks, good, ripe fruit always hits the spot. Strawberries, peaches, kiwis or whatever is in season.

Favorite food to make yourself?
Bim Bim Bap, for sure. I probably cook tastier meals, but nothing is as fun as Bim Bim Bap. The rice, spinach, sprouts, kimchi, or whatever I have on hand mixed with the hot pepper paste and fried egg makes me happy.

What do you bring to a pot luck?
I steal my father-in-law's sticky sweet BBQ sauce and usually make some BBQ Chicken sandwiches.

What's your least favorite food?
Meatloaf. ::Shudders at the thought of Young Brandon being force fed this foul dish by my mother::

Favorite and/or least favorite food celeb?
Rachel Ray is certainly a denizen of Satan himself.

What do you do when you're not eating or drinking?
I just started volunteering as a wrestling coach at T.C. Williams High School. You could call it zoo keeping, I call it shaping the youth of America.

Anything else? Congrats on the engagement ;)   editors note: Thanks!

  October's Food Dudette:
Emily, LA California, Deep Fryin' a Turkey

What is going on in this picture?
The annual family turkey deep frying. It's a delightfully tacky (but delicious) tradition. Dad fires
up the ol' deep fryer out back and everyone drinks and watches and discusses if this will be the year that the turkey explodes. Other uses for the family deep fryer: Buford Stew.

Last thing you ate?

Pasta with LaRosas sauce, brought to me from my beloved southwestern Ohio.

Best thing you’ve eaten recently?
Either the sag paneer from Taj Mahal of India (my favorite Indian place in LA--super cheap!) or chocolate
pumpkin bread pudding made over the weekend.

All time favorite food?
The farther the miles from home, the further my grandma's baked macaroni and cheese moves up the list. It's at number one right now.

Favorite dessert?
Pumpkin cake with cream cheese icing.

Favorite local restaurant?
Marion's Piazza in Dayton, Ohio. Hands down.

Favorite chain restaurant?
McDonalds.

Favorite non-alcoholic drink?
At the moment, horchata.

Favorite alcoholic beverage?
Whiskey sour, please!

Ultimate food day? And/or best breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, snack?
Grandma cooked meals, all day. Fancy cake for dessert.

Favorite food to make yourself?
I think it's a tie between a Fluffernutter sandwich, or a strawberry and sugar sandwich on Wonder Bread.

What do you bring to a pot luck?
Grandma's baked macaroni and cheese, unless I'm in the company of vegans. In that case, easy crockpot
chili.

What's your least favorite food?
Something served at Bob Evans. But I can't put my finger on exactly what. I just hate that place.

Favorite and/or least favorite food celeb?
I. Love. Paula. Dean.

What do you do when you're not eating or drinking?
Reading scripts, putting off reading scripts, complaining about reading bad scripts, wishing I got to read more good scripts. Or, watching copious amounts of television.

Anything else?My two favorite jobs have been at a fancy pastry shop that makes much of the income with wedding cakes. The other was at the Ohio State Fair, where I daily dined on deep fried everything. I feel that this dichotomy says a little about me.

September's Food Dude and Food Dudette

This month started off with one of the most pleasant days all summer cool and crisp, yet sunny (and no flippin' humidity!)...in other words, the perfect jacket weather. September is boss because it brings us fall, a season chocked full of the best food known on earth. The rich breeze coupled with the first few trees on the block changing their shade, is a comforting reminder that Halloween is on it's way and soon the grocery store will be carrying apple cider, and pumpkin pie en masse. Everywhere I turn it seems there is another magazine teaching it's readers how to make a cake look spider webed, or like a graveyard (complete with gummi worms). Pumpkins replace flower pots on porch stoops and roadside booths that once sold corn earlier in the year now have gourds and apples. This month is rich with both delectable dishes and novelty noshes, ensuring we will provide you with enough fodder to feed your feasting eyes for weeks! And to kick it all off, this month we have a Dude and Dudette with a hunger for the absurd.

September's Food Dudette:
Kristy, Ann Arbor Michigan, eating yellow watermelon found at a local Farmer's Market

Last thing you ate?
A thick slice of double oatmeal bread, toasted and buttered.

Best thing you’ve eaten recently?

I bought a stove top waffle iron from the Salvation Army for $4.50, and recently made a yeasted waffle recipe. These were ultra tasty, with caramelized sugar in them. They definitely required no additional toppings.

All time favorite food?
Rhubarb. While it isn't easy to come by, and doesn't work with everything, it's my hands-down all time favorite. It's best used in baking, but I normally sneak a few bites of it uncooked here and there. Apparently in some areas of Europe, rhubarb stalks are broken off, dipped in sugar, and then snacked on as a sweet treat.

Favorite dessert?
Honestly, I always enjoy fruit cobbler. It's pretty, easy, tastes ultra fresh, can have differing ingredients from time to time, and is generally delicious. I like large pearl tapioca pudding, but that is much, much easier to screw up.

Favorite local restaurant?
Angelo's. It's a breakfast and lunch eatery close to my home in Ann Arbor. Go for the breakfast. They make their own bread, and also serve a wicked deep fried french toast with fruit. I typically order their eggs florentine on wheat, and they serve it with a thick slice of tomato on top.

Favorite chain restaurant?
I don't know if it's a favorite, but it's definitely something I lean toward - I habitually will order a greasy grilled cheese and fries at Big Boy. It just seems like the right thing to get if I end up at one. If I order something else while there, I always wish I had gotten one of these instead.

Favorite non-alcoholic drink?
I enjoy coffee almost daily. I don't regularly hit up any coffee shops, but I really enjoy a good cuppa. The french press at home has been in use a lot lately. When it gets colder out, the cheapie espresso machine is going to start working some magic. I pick up coffee from a local roaster, Roos Roast. I'm a big fan of their "Rich French Neighbor" blend.

Favorite alcoholic beverage?
I always thought I would love mint juleps, but haven't ever managed to try one. I have, however, enjoyed rye whiskey with a friend from Denmark and it was amazing. That could definitely be my standby drink, if I ever get around to buying a bottle.

Ultimate food day? (i.e. best breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, snack)?

It would definitely start at the farmer's market. Ann Arbor has a terrific following for locally grown and home grown foods. I love to go there and find out what new items are in season. New on the scene this week: leeks, pears, and sweet potatoes. Ideally, I would have to make something using at least a few of the ingredients when I get home... or after breakfast at Angelo's.

Favorite food to make yourself?
After a long day, definitely a grilled cheese sandwich. On a day when I've got plenty of time to kill, I end up taking on obscenely difficult foods, or ones that have been perceived to be difficult. So far this year, I've made puff pastry, ravioli without machinery or presses, ice cream without a machine, hummus, and pita bread. Let's just say I like to challenge myself.

What do you bring to a pot luck?

Typically, I just ask the host or hostess if there is anything I can bring. It's awkward to hear side comments about not needing any more desserts, or having spaces to put more food. If they have food taken care of, I ask if they need plates or drinks. If it's a real pot luck, then I ask what other people are bringing, or if anything seems to be missing.

What's your least favorite food?

I'm not a vegetarian, but I don't like to make a meal out of meat. I'm very much into smaller portions - you know, the ones that are recommended, palm-sized or even half that. And if the meat is far overdone, there is a good chance that I won't have much of it at all.

Favorite and/or least favorite food celeb?

Possibly an un-celeb. Or an inter-celeb. I don't have cable TV at home, and haven't for years, though I do occasionally look up recipes from Food Network or catch shows (Iron Chef is great). I enjoy the honesty, enthusiasm, and awesome presentation Deb at smittenkitchen.com offers. This woman's photos food-tease me into making those recipes. I can't resist.

What do you do when you're not eating or drinking?
I lead a simple life. I knit, and go to the library. I'm also trying to take in as much of the nice weather as I can before this area grows a layer of snow and ice. I'm not entirely against snow and ice, it's just a bit nicer to take walks when you don't have to worry about windchill.

September's Food Dude:
John, Washington DC, eating a foot long hot dog at the Minnesota State Fair

Last thing you ate?
Coffee Cake, 1% Milk, Spaghetti w/Spicy Italian Sausage

Best thing you’ve eaten recently?
Although many of the items I consumed at the Minnesota State Fair were excellent, the classic foot long hot dog w/grilled onions wins out [it sure does! the proof is in the picture].

All time favorite food?
Apple Pie, made by my mother (awwwwww) with Haralson Apples. Haralsons are tart and crisp, ideal for pie making!

Favorite dessert?
See Above

Favorite local restaurant?
I really enjoy the Commonwealth Gastro-Pub in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of DC. British food is actually really underrated. The London Broil there is tops.

Favorite chain restaurant?
Chipotle, hands down. Great food, always consistent. I also appreciate their efforts to carry humanely raised meat. I tried Qdoba for the first time recently, and have to say that Alex [August's Food Dude] is 100% wrong. Although when I went, they managed to also screw up my order which didn't help.

Favorite non-alcoholic drink?
Probably coffee, as it is essential to my well being. I know everyone makes some kind of remark about being "addicted" to caffeine, but I am in some serious trouble without my coffee.

Favorite alcoholic beverage?
Gin and Tonic, with Plymouth Gin, and preferably with a lime.

Ultimate food day (i.e. best breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, snack)?
Breakfast: Huevos Rancheros, with plenty of hot sauce. Yum!
Lunch: Grilled cheese sandwich with sharp white cheddar (Cabot is my current fav) and tomatoes
Dinner: I haven't had as much good BBQ as I'd like to, but Arthur Bryant's in Kansas City is the best I've had. I'd opt for the pork sandwich.
Dessert: Mom's apple pie, or getting a bucket of cookies at the Minnesota State Fair (followed by a visit to the all you can drink milk booth).
Snack: Cat Cookies (For People) from Trader Joe's.

Favorite food to make yourself?
A Japanese curry noddle dish I found in Veganomicon. Tasty for non-vegans too!

What do you bring to a pot luck?
Usually I get lazy and bring beer or chips, but when I'm less of a slacker I bring deviled eggs.

What's your least favorite food?
White Chocolate makes me instantly sick. I also hate Lima Beans and cannot be convinced otherwise.

Favorite and/or least favorite food celeb?
Gordon Ramsay is my favorite, but not the Americanized one that appears on Fox. Watch the BBC version of "Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares" for the Gordon I know and love. Best reality show ever. Rachel Ray is my least favorite because there isn't anything unique about what she cooks, she endorses a bunch of crap products all the time, and I find her voice fairly annoying.

What do you do when you're not eating or drinking?
Well, since I've been unemployed, not much else. But I do enjoy traveling, watching baseball, and being homemaker for my girlfriend.

Introducing Our First Food Dude and Dudette of the Month!

I am happy to announce a new monthly feature for WWEIL, the start of our Food Dude and Dudette of the Month Contest. If you would like to be featured on our blog please send a unique picture of you eating or a pic of some creative food that you made (don't forget to add a description of what's going on) to iloveluce@gmail.com with Food Dude or Food Dudette in the subject line and make sure to get it in before the 1st of the month you're vying for. If you get picked we will send you a survey about your food related interests and then post it and the picture up the first week of that month. We hope to feature a new dude and dudette every month!

Our August winners are below. Congrats on your astounding food preparation and consumption abilities!

August's Food Dude:
Alex, Chicago Illinois, eating ribs

Last thing you ate?
Last night I had a burrito the size of your head from La Pasadita. It was the infamous "Super Burrito." This place is hilarious- there are three different La Pasadita's all within the block, and on the same street.

Best thing you’ve eaten recently?
Ribs, cornbread, mac and cheese, and baked beans from Hickory's BBQ in Chicago. It's BYOB and connected to a gas station.

All time favorite food?
Enchiladas, no meat...I'm definitely no vegetarian, but cheese, rice and beans only need to be in the center of these bad boys.

Favorite dessert?
Cappuccino's are a great way to end a great meal.

Favorite local restaurant?
Kuma's Corner. Infamous for being a Heavy Metal bar that serves huge burgers with absurd toppings on them. All the burgers are named after metal bands. I recommend "The Slayer," "The Pantera," and "The Neurosis."

Favorite chain restaurant?
Qdoba makes a great Queso Burrito. They often end up larger than Chipotle burritos too.

Favorite non-alcoholic drink?
Goose Island Orange Cream Soda.

Favorite alcoholic beverage?
Anything made by Lagunita's brewery.

Ultimate food day? And/or best breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, snack?
I've never done this, but it's called "The Meat Wave." You go to Hot Doug's (Anthony Bourdain loves this place) for lunch. They close at 4pm and have strange hours and the strangest hot dogs on the planet. The last time I went you could get a Rattlesnake hot dog. Once you get your obscure meat from Hot Doug's, you head to Kuma's Corner for a nice dinner. Hence, The Meat Wave.

Favorite food to make yourself?
I thoroughly enjoy making my own pizzas and enchiladas.

What do you bring to a pot luck?
Potato Salad, and Orange Sorbet.

What's your least favorite food?
Everyone hates me for this, but I can't do Italian. Too much garlic is my enemy.

What do you do when you're not eating or drinking?
That is a big part of my day, but I am also writer and graduate student in Chicago. I enjoy riding bikes, baseball, making music, and a good game of bowling.

August's Food Dudette:
Eryn, Balitmore Maryland, prego cupcakes she made for the season finale of "16 and Pregnant"

for dinner i would have a boca burger and fries from red robin with a chocolate and peanut butter milkshake.

i hate making food myself and i believe that when others make you food, it tastes better.

What do you bring to a pot luck?
oreo pie.

What's your least favorite food?
meat. any and all meat.

What do you do when you're not eating or drinking?
break hearts and crush skulls.
